On December 17, 2024, I took a package to the McKnight Post Office to send to Moab, Utah. I brought my own stamps, including a sheet of $1.65 international stamps. I told the young lady I only needed to know how much was the postage, and I would put my own stamps on. But, after quoting me $7.40, she said "Here, I can do that for you" and took my sheet of $1.65 stamps. After putting about five on, she said, "Now all I need is one regular stamp." So I gave her a Madonna stamp - but after putting it on, she proceeded to put about five MORE $1.65 stamps on. I was alarmed, but figured she knew her job . Driving home I mentally calculated that ten times $1.65 came to $16.50 - much more than $7.40, so I turned back. After waiting in line, when I got to her, she said, "Well - back so soon?" I said, "I think you made a mistake. " "Oh? How.." I pointed to the single $1.65 stamp remaining on the sheet and said - still assuming she'd made an honest mistake - "I think you thought this was worth only 73 cents." She replied, "No! This stamp is worth one dollar and sixty-five cents!" "Then why did you put ten of them on my $7.40 package?" She retrieved the package, then said, "I apologize, but mistakes will happen. You'll have to pick the stamps off - but move over there, I've got a line of customers waiting." Annoyed by her impersonal manner, I stayed where I was, picking the stamps off. By the time we got the right amount, I was so steamed at having driven back and waited in line twice, only to be treated so impersonally, I said, "Your mistake wasted a lot of my time." She replied, cheerfully, "OH! I'm SO Sorry." Then I began to suspect this had all been done purposefully to express contempt. This is the first time in thirty years of going to the McKnight post office that I've ever been treated with anything but the most courteous and professional manner.
